Finasteride is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is a type of drug called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
Finasteride works by blocking the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting the male hormone testosterone into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT plays a key role in the miniaturization of hair follicles on the scalp, which leads to male pattern baldness. By lowering the levels of DHT in the body, finasteride can slow or stop hair loss.
